What is NIE and what is it used for?

Definition of NIE

NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a unique and exclusive number that is given to foreigners who have some kind of relationship with Spain and have economic, professional or social interest. 

What is it used for?

NIE is necessary to carry out various economic and fiscal operations. You can ask for this number when signing a contract, paying taxes, accessing public services, working, setting up a company, etc.   

Isn’t that the same as Spanish residency?

No, they are two very different documents. As we mentioned before, NIE is a number that is assigned to foreigners regardless of whether they live in the country or not, it is also a Spanish tax identification number. But that number will be udes in the residency. 

TIE is a residence permits for foreigners who are planning to stay in Spain for more than 6 months.
